Review

For starters, I read this book on wattpad before it was signed to a publisher.

This book is for everyone looking for a quick and thrilling read. I loved everything about it: from the storyline, the research, down to the way the plot kicked in. Granted there were some scenes that needed polishing, some awkward lines but they were minor and I barely noticed them since I just lost myself into the pages of this captivating book.

This is the first book in the Watchers of Men installment. The story starts with timid and awkward Eden as she came back to town where she met her childhood friend, Micah. The book progresses by alternating between them; Micah, finding out he is appointed as the Captain’s Seer and Eden, making new friends and discovering that she has a guardian.

The Writing

It’s not the most detailed out there, not the best book in terms of writing but I think it’s exactly its concise and clean nature that pulled me in from the start. There is a certain hook, a certain appeal to the simple writing style that just kept me reading until midnight! It’s written in the third pov which I see as an excellent choice since there were quite a number of characters here. The pace is fairly decent, just enough to keep you on your toes.

The Characters

While Eden and Micah aren’t on my best list, I have a number of favorites from this book! Gabriel being one of them!

Though I must say, Trent by far is the most agreeable out of all the characters! He is charming and witty and funny. You just can’t help but smile whenever he’s out.

The Plot

I love the plot! While it’s simple, it’s thought out and thrilling. It wasn’t predictable to me in any way. Actually, I think it’s original since this is the first time I came across with something like this. Amanda gave justice to the angels vs demons plot line, adding some spices and twists no one could’ve expected. I really like how she wrote them across. They’re not the cliche types you usually read in other books. They were better and I’m especially drawn to the angelic hierarchy and Enoch backdrop she weaved into the story line.

The Research

I write an angel/demon story myself so I have a deep background of the lore. It’s this reason why I avoid Angel/demon stories. Nothing can just satiate me and some books – which I won’t mention – are just so terrible and annoying that they made me cry in frustration and pull my hair out.

This book is not one of them. Amanda did a great job in the research department and I like how she incorporated them in the story smoothly. Never once did I feel like I was getting bombarded by details, no. There was minimal info dump, except at the end parts of the book but I didn’t find it bad at all. In fact, those parts were the highlights of the book for me.

The Rating

I give this book 4.5/5. It’s rare for me to find an easy-to-follow book like this one and The Awakener is definitely going to my favorite lists! It’s fabulous, compelling and intriguing! Especially at the end where everything, especially the title, made sense. It just made me want to read the next books more! I can’t wait to see what Amanda has in store for us!
